Walk Before Me

The word walk is used in the ordinary understanding, such as “physically walk with me.” But in the Bible a version of that word is Peripateo (figuratively to live, deport oneself, be occupied with; it refers to “character.”) Consider the use of the word by John:

John 1:36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked (lived), he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

John is not saying, “look at Jesus as He physically walks,” he is saying “look at Jesus’ character; how He lived.” Look at these other examples in which I have highlighted the reference to “character” for “walk.”

2 Cor 10:2 But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the(character) of the flesh.

2 Cor 12:18 I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the character of the flesh?

Gal 2:14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly (not in character)according to the truth of the gospel), I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course (character) of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Col 3:6-7 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which (character) ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

For a long time, I carried the thought of physically keeping up, matching, or pacing myself in my walk with Jesus as the Holy Spirit would lead and guide me. But when I began to understand that my “walk with God” truly meant living my life in His character (the character I have been given in the Holy Spirit) it gave fresh meaning to Paul’s word to the Romans the spells out our “walk” … our character.

Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image (character) of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
