Moses and the Israelites were in the desert and no doubt he spent some sleepless nights wondering what was he going to do with them; what God was going to do? They had to be fed, and feeding 2 to 3 million people required a lot of food. Here are some interesting thoughts that I found and included in my book The Pathway To Rest that, while I don’t speak for their accuracy and the omission of manna and quail from heaven and water from the rock … the pictures make the point of the faith required.
According to the Quartermaster General of the Army, Moses would have to have had 1,500 tons of food each day. To bring that much food each day would require two freight trains, each at least a mile long.
They were out in the desert, so they would have to have 4,000 tons of wood firewood that would require and a few more freight trains, each a mile long, just for one day … and they were forty years in transit.
They would have to have water. If they only had enough to drink and wash a few dishes, it would take 11,000,000 gallons each day and a freight train with tank cars 1,800 miles long, just to bring it.
They had to get across the Red Sea at night. If they went on a narrow path, double file, the line would be 800 miles long and would require 35 days and nights to get through. So there had to be a space in the Red Sea, 3 miles wide, so that they could walk 5,000 abreast to get over in one night.
They had to every night, which would require a campground two-thirds the size of the state of Rhode Island.
I think it is safe to say that Moses did not work this all out before he left Egypt. No, by faith he believed and trusted God. As a result, God took care of these things for him.
How is your faith? Do you think God has any problem taking care of all your needs? Here is a thought to keep in your pocket for the next time your faith needs a nudge … When the road you’re traveling seems difficult at best, just remember, keep on praying, and God will do the rest.
