Jer 45:5 And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the Lord: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest. KJV

I don’t know how many times I have read this verse, but each time that one little word – prey – always presented a question mark. But when you go to Hebrew text the meaning of the word becomes clearer.

Jer 45:5 And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them. For, behold, I will bring evil on all flesh, declares Jehovah. But I will give your soul to you for a prize, there on all the places where you go. Masoretic Text

The phrase “thy life will I give unto thee for a prey is an old King James expression that can easily be misunderstood today because we usually think of “prey” as an animal caught by a predator. In this context, it means something quite different. The phrase appears several times in the book of Jeremiah where the Hebrew word Shalal literally means; prey. In Greek the word is Skyla and it carries the same image:

Luke 11:22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

Spoil
Blunder
Booty
Something taken after battle

The picture is that of a soldier who survives a fierce battle. He may have lost all his possessions – his home, his friends, and everything else – but he escapes with his life; it becomes the only spoil he carries away from the battlefield.

So, the expression means:

You will escape with your life.
Your life will be your only reward.
You will survive, though you may lose everything else.

Imagine a battle where everyone is fighting for survival. After the battle, a victorious soldier gathers the spoil, but another who barely escapes has no treasure to carry away except his own life. That is exactly the picture God gives to Baruch in Jeremiah 45. Baruch had hoped for greater things, but God told him not to seek them because judgment was coming on the nation. Instead, God promised him one precious gift: Your life will be spared.

Spiritual Application

This phrase reminds us that there are seasons when God’s greatest blessing is not prosperity or success but preservation …

I will bring you through.
You will survive.
Though much is lost, I will preserve your life.

For believers, there is a beautiful parallel. Through the spiritual battle of this fallen world, everything earthly is temporary, but in Christ we have received the greatest Shalal of all—eternal life. Even when earthly things are lost, what God preserves is infinitely more valuable; His promise of preservation in the midst of judgment and adversity.

This is the same perspective from which Paul wrote:

Rom 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. ESV

But in the context of God’s economy, our woes and unfulfilled life pale in comparison to God’s final glory when it is revealed. What we are going through is not worth a moment’s attention. On that day, at that moment, we will say … what woe, what suffering! To that end we are certain that God will take care of each of His children … but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.

For the bride of Christ that Shalal, that prize, that reward, is that our spiritual life will never be lost; no matter where we go or what we go through. We do not have to fear the enemy; his war has already been lost; our path is clear.

Matt 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. ESV

You will escape with your life.
Your life will be your only reward.
You will survive, though you may lose everything else.

When we are serving the Lord, we are never to seek great things for ourselves. The only important thing is that God’s work is accomplished and He is glorified. And when the fiery trial comes … our life will be given unto us for a prey!
